"It's fun to be idealistic in a world of moral absolutes. I know because I'm a columnist. But when we start discussing history, things always seem to get complicated. "

...

"After all, if waterboarding is a war crime, the dropping of an atomic bomb on a few hundred thousand innocent civilians surely deserves some serious consideration for rebuke. At the very least, it's a fair topic for discussion. "

More Than Happy

The torture was about vengence and wanting the enemy to feel pain and suffering, not any of these noble causes behind which they try to hide. War is a crime, and torture is, too.

My brother told me something that I hadn't heard up to that point a few years ago--"History is always told by the victor."

You can take from it what you want, but it made a lot of sense to me why I had only learned the one side of the story growing up. Yet, being of German descent (and living in a community that largely was also), my family had always instilled a sense of pride in our heritage. It wasn't until college (about 10 years after I should have gone), that I learned the other side of the story for many wars and problems in the world. Personally, I would like to see WWII and the dropping of the atomic bombs was a turning point in human history--that maybe, just maybe, some of us get that killing and hurting each other isn't the way to get ahead. Education really is the key--however, if your education is based on some archaic sense of religion or society, you may not get the whole story.
